SP Industries Announces Brian M. Larkin as New President and CEO

Warminster, PA - March 13, 2018 - Brian Larkin, CEO of SP Industries, Inc. (SP) has announced the appointment of Martin Tricarico as Senior Vice President of Sales for SP Industries Scienceware and Ableware divisions. Tricarico who has an extensive leadership background in life sciences and related markets from start-ups to multinational corporations that include GE Healthcare, has been tapped to lead the sales and customer service teams covering catalog and OEM sales for Wilmad-LabGlass, Bel-Art and Maddak brand products.

In making the announcement Larkin stated, "Martin has an impressive track record in developing and executing strategic plans focused on building core strengths, maximizing ROI and leading the market. We look forward to the benefit of his expertise and vision as we continue to passionately deliver confidence to our customers by providing researchers with innovative, solution-based labware for today's workflows."

SP Scienceware offers a diverse product portfolio of 9000+ items that include Wilmad-LabGlass glassware and nmr/epr tubes and accessories, as well as Bel-Art and H-B Instrument brand labware for sample handling including racks, bottles, desiccators, thermometers and more. Most recently Tricarico was Vice President of Sales for SIO2 Medical Products Advanced Lab Consumables Division and has held commercial leadership roles at GE Healthcare, Whatman Ltd., Amersham Biosciences and others. He holds an M.S. in Biology from Drexel University and completed his undergraduate work in Microbiology at Rutgers University. Tricarico will be based out of SP Industries Wayne, NJ office and resides in Piscataway, New Jersey with his wife and five children.

SP Industries Announces Brian M. Larkin as New President and CEO

Warminster, PA - March 7, 2018 - SP Industries Inc. has announced the appointment of Brian Larkin as its President and Chief Executive Officer effective February 19th, replacing William (Bill) Downs who recently retired.

Mr. Larkin brings to SP broad experience as a senior executive having spent the last 27 years in commercial and executive leadership roles in the medical device industry. Most recently he served as Vice President and General Manager for Becton Dickinson's US Diabetes Care business and prior to that was Senior Vice President and General Manager of LifeCell Corporation.

Before that Mr. Larkin spent 16 years at Integra LifeSciences Corporation where he served in a variety of executive roles including President of the company's NeuroSciences Division and President of the Spine and Orthobiologics Division. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for Dynatronics Corporation (NASDAQ - DYNT).

Happy Fibonacci Day!

In addition to this Thursday being Thanksgiving here in the States, November 23 is also Fibonacci Day! If you remember from math class, the Fibonacci sequence is an integer sequence in which every number after the first two is the sum of the two preceding numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, ...
While it may look simplistic, the sequence actually has far reaching implications, more than even Fibonacci himself probably imagined!

  • Named after Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci, who introduced the sequence to Western European mathematics in the 1200's.
  • Used in many different mathematics applications & algorithms, but also in investments, artwork, even architecture!*
  • The sequence can even be found in nature! Fibonacci spirals, aka 'nature's numbers' can be seen on flower petals and seeds, plant leaves, nautilus shells, the DNA molecule, and even hurricanes and galaxies.
  • The spiral is charted as a series of connected quarter-circles drawn inside an array of squares with Fibonacci numbers for dimensions. (see right).

When does a pumpkin go from big to giant? 100 lbs? 1000 lbs? More? In the 1980's, the heaviest pumpkin weighed in at just over 400 lbs. Now, pumpkin growers are aiming for 2000+ lbs, and getting heavier every year! Here are some interesting facts about these scale-tipping giants!

  • Virtually all giant pumpkins are descended from "Dill's Atlantic Giant" variety which took 30 years to cultivate.
  • High-pedigree hybrid seeds of prize-winning giant pumpkins can cost growers anywhere from $10-100 or more per seed.
  • The world record for the heaviest pumpkin is held by Mathias Willemijns of Belgium. The pumpkin weighed 1,190.49 kg (2,624.6 lb)
  • Bragging rights are not all you win for growing a giant: the recent winner of the 2017 Half Moon Bay Champion Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California took home $7 per pound for his 2,363 lb pumpkin (that's $16,541!)
